Once in a while I read a book and have the urge to tell everyone how great it is. There is no particular order to this list and it is a work in progress, but I will try to clearly indicate why you should read it - pleasure, learning, inspiration or all three!
LEARNING THE CRAFT - NOVEL This is an amazing book that helps you to finish your novel once you have a draft. The concepts are clear and the ideas easy to implement. The result is a much better grasp of the structure of your book, the purpose of scenes, and giving the reader bite sized repetition that makes story elements stand out and have meaning.
LEARNING THE CRAFT
I honestly can't say enough good things about this book. David is a master of developing the character arc. The way he describes concepts is powerful and the exercises force you to delve deep into your own emotional experiences.
Irish writer Anne Enright is one my favourites. She writes about family, and is a keen observer of character. She can say in one line what many struggle to say in a paragraph. Everything she writes reflects the human condition.
